While many people would like to don the robe of
kings, only a select few are capable of supporting its weight. With promises of
wealth, prestige, protection, and authority, the privileges of power beckon.
Power, on the other hand, is like a poisoned apple whose core can be broken
with just one bite. There is no one else to follow those who set the example.
There is no instruction manual for leaders.
A king can't
be told by a map which way will bring his country prosperity or destruction. In
order to ensure the safety of those who follow them, leaders need to move forward
with confidence and carefully consider all possible outcomes. The weight of the
thousands of lives that are on the king's shoulders cannot be supported by
anything but the velvet of a royal cloak. Leaders must strike a delicate
balance between their enormous responsibilities to their followers, who rely on
them for direction, and the privileges of authority.
A queen who eats in her palace while her people
starve will quickly realize that her people cannot be stopped when they turn
against her if her title cannot turn into food and her crown cannot turn into
water. If no one chooses to follow a king, he isn't one. When times are tough
and your team looks to you for direction, are you ready to lead? All of us want
to be better, not to be royalty. Through the things you accomplish with less,
demonstrate your readiness for more in your family, work, and everyday life. If
you hope to lead, first you must find the path before others can follow your
directions. ▲
